Cyclist makes ‘miraculous’ recovery
But Aaron, from Fair Oak, near Southampton, Hants, has done more than just survive. And despite initial fears he would be paralysed for life he is now on the road to recovery.
Doctors described Aaron’s turn-around as “miraculous”.
Deborah said: “When I first saw him lying on the hospital bed, it did not sink in. I think we were in complete shock.”
“They thought he would not make it through the night so we stayed by his side.We were told by physicians that if there was no sign of life they may have to switch the life support machine off. They stated they would do absolutely everything they could, but if there was no sign of life there was nothing more they could do.”
Aaron was riding back from work in March this year when he collided with a Ford vehicle, smashed into the windscreen and landed on the road. In an incredible stroke of good fortune that may have saved Aaron’s life, a former nurse was gardening in a neighbouring property.
She heard the screech of tyres and clambered over a fence to reach Aaron, who was groaning and trying to move. Crucially, she was able to hold him in position and provide emergency care while paramedics rushed to the scene. Aaron sustained serious head injuries and broke his neck, pelvis, multiple ribs, wrist and nose.
He severed one of two arteries in his neck, lacerated his spleen causing internal bleeding, bruised his spinal chord and suffered a punctured lung.
A police investigation was launched and no blame was attached to the driver of the car. Deborah and his sister Leanne, 23, kept up a constant bedside vigil over the coming days. Aaron has undergone a series of painful operations to gradually regain his health and fitness.
With remarkable determination and character he is now back on his feet and able to walk unaided. He is currently undergoing further treatment in a specialist neurological hospital in Salisbury.
Deborah added: “The physicians stated it was ‘miraculous’, they think he could be back home in three or four months which is astonishing considering all his injuries and considering we so almost lost him.”
“His determination has got him this far. He is such a fighter and has always been a really strong character. And sure enough he has done it.
The day he left the Southampton General Hospital ward, one of the high dependency nurses stated ‘none of us thought he would do this well and would survive’.
