Riot death toll in Bangkok at 21
Shaken tourists are wandering the streets in the aftermath of bloody political battles next to Bangkok’s iconic backpacker strip and many are leaving in the wake of clashes between anti-government Red Shirts and security forces which have left 21 people dead and more than 800 injured.
The Associated Press reported that four soldiers and 17 civilians were killed, according to the government’s Erawan emergency centre.
The deaths included Japanese cameraman Hiro Muramoto, who worked for the Thomson Reuters news agency.
In a statement, Reuters stated he was shot in the chest and the circumstances of his death were under review.
The clashes, which followed nearly a month of mass demonstrations, marked Thailand’s bloodiest political violence in nearly two decades.
