A desperate fightback in the final quarter nearly provided Sydney with a stunning upset, but the comeback Kings fell painfully short as Townsville escaped with an 80-79 win at home on Saturday.
Down by eight points at the final change, despite leading 45-44 at half-time, the Kings came home strong but could only overturn the deficit by seven in the fourth quarter.
Michael Cedar looked to have comfortably settled the matter at 80-73 when he netted a field goal with tiny over three minutes to go, before a pair of free throws from Luke Cooper, and two-pointers from Cooper and Julian Khazzouh made for a tense final minute.
However the Crocs were able to shut-out the Kings until the full-time siren, hanging on for a memorable win at the Townsville Entertainment centre.
Cooper (15 points) and Khazzouh (14) completed among the most influential contributers for the Kings but it was Townsville’s Luke Schenscher who stole the show with a double-double worth 26 points and 10 rebounds.
Schenscher also provided three assists in his man-of-the-match performance.
